Mise-en-Scene
The location of the two characters in the first scene tells us that they have a close relationship due to them being in a kitchen and arguing over there kids. When arguing the male takes up the usual stereotypes of the alpha male. Very aggressive when speaking, talking about the money he earns, and fairly uncaring towards his wife and also the kids that are in the next room listening to them. The woman takes up the general stereotypes as well, being a housewife; this is by arguing but also still washing up as stereotypical women do. But she also has a gender change as through the argument, she is starting to become more aggressive and competitive towards her husband. Throughout you see the male always having more power over the female, due to stereotypes and how society always intended it. When the male leaves he goes to work on a construction site, by using a hammer, which is phallic object, helps us to understand that he is the alpha male.
Camera
When arguing, the camera kept its distance from the couple, this could symbolise that there relationship is quite distant, so there isn't a lot of communication and they are drifting apart. When she was trying to fix the pipe in the kitchen, they used a low angle to how powerless she was at that moment because she couldn't control what was going on. When the man in business dress comes to help and then they start to kiss, the shot becomes more of a close up to show that the woman is now creating more power by cheating on her husband.
Sound
The sounds in the beginning are quite load, very masculine. Voices are raised to show anger and power. Going more on the masculine sounds, when the man goes to work there is a lot of banging and load noises to show off more signs of anger and aggression. The edit helps the soundings a lot in this scene as they match who has the louder voice, and they for the more power over the opposed character.
Edit
When editing this together, they did a good job in making it clear who had more dominance in the argument. But they didn't really keep it, as an equal convocation as most of the camera time was on the male, as we know from stereotypes, will always have most power and importance over the female. They have mostly put the screen time on the male character, as he is the one who started this all, and also kept importance throughout. They edited it in quite a masculine way as when they cut to a different scene, they are fast movements, this also shows dominance because it only changes when characters get louder or just to show off who's boss.
